Werepuppy, Black Hellebore, Bohun Upas, Chaste Moon
2mila
Werepuppy

A fuzzy brown honey-dusted musk covering freshly-washed baby skin and a howl of milk breath. In the background, there's the barest hint of upturned soil and dew-covered squished stems from a trampled flowerbed.

I'm so disappointed with this one - probably because my expectations were so high. (To the point that I bought 2 bottles without sniffing it first. Now I'll have to pass them along.) I mean, how cool is the name "Werepuppy"??? I expected puppy smell (soft, divine, musky fur = happiness), mixed with a baby scent (something that Johnson & Johnson's might use), mixed with a bit of dirt and grass, topped up with a cute puppy howl. (I thought the scent would be ADORABLE.) But I didn't get ANY of these notes. I got, perhaps, musk and spice. The spice is not overwhelming, offensive or anything, but it robs the pleasure of the scent for me. I cannot describe it any better... this was one-dimensional and lacking on any good attributes.

Verdict: Must sell or trade my 2 bottles.

Black Hellebore

Also called Melampode. In witchcraft legend, this is one of the components of the notorious flying ointment, and is used in rituals that summon the Devil. In Greek mythology, Melampus of Pylos used hellebore to save the daughters of the king of Argos from a Dionysian Maenad-like madness. In Christian myth, hellebore was born from the tears a little girl shed onto the snow because she had no gift to give to the Christ child. In low magick, it has been used by farmers to protect their livestock from the evil eye. Court magicians have used it in martial invisibility spells, enabling spies and assassins to infiltrate enemy camps. Hellebore resembles the wild rose, but does not belong to their family. The scent is a pale green herbal, darkly rooty, with a faint rose and peony-like overtone.

Another one-note floral from Rappaccini's Garden. I NEVER like anything from Rappaccini's Garden, but for some reason a bunch of these imps ended up in my hands; now I might as well test them.

Sooo, I dislike R.G. and dislike florals. Considering that, this one is not bad. It's pretty wearable, exotic but not unfamiliar (just enough not to smell generic).

Verdict: swap box.

Bohun Upas

The Tree of Poisons. Every aspect of this tree is toxic, from the narcotic, lethal fumes that it emits, to its oozing, poisonous sap. A deceptively tranquil scent: heady fruits, dry bark, and deep green leaves, enveloped by a dark and sinister murk.

Another Rappaccini's Garden one-note floral. (Grrrrr, these keep crossing my way, like weeds!!!) Well, at least this one is different; no one can ever call it generic. It has lots of personality, and the description is way cool. Still, the scent is not my cup of tea: bitter, dry, dark, poisonous, with zero sense of humor, zero sugar, not a single smile or ray of sunshine. This tree of the description belongs in a dark, creepy forest.

Color: charcoal

Verdict:
will pass

Chaste Moon

Though March marks the end of the desolation and chill of winter, it is not yet Spring, the time of rebirth, fertility and the Earth's fecundity. March's Full Moon is a Virgin's Moon, pure, youthful, unsullied and innocent. This is the Moon of the Child, and the scent is as soft and gentle as a baby's breath: milky blossoms and soft cream touch the last buds of winter, coupled with crystalline, hazy traditional Lunar oils.

I applied Scent of Angels to one wrist, and Chaste Moon to the other. They have a similar quality: being kind of innocent, non-offensive, soft, light-musky. Chaste Moon is less sweet, and it lacks... magic. Doesn't evoke any images. It reminds me of Penitence a bit (as it's soft and on the somber side), but it lacks the confort. I sniff my wrist, "kind of-sort of" like it, but then ask myself, so what? I don't feel like sniffing it over and over. It doesn't inspire me or give me pleasure. It's just there.

It is very wearable, though, and I can see someone else falling in love with it. It just doesn't do it for me.

BPAL Epitaph, Arcana Sweet Box, Possets Sent of Angels

Epitaph
Heap not on this mound
Roses that she loved so well:
Why bewilder her with roses,
That she cannot see or smell?

She is happy where she lies
With the dust upon her eyes.

Roses and funeral lilies perceived, faintly, through an indistinct, ghostly mist.

Roses, lilies. A cemetery. Mist - white, ethereal, otherwordly mist. An old-looking tombstone in a cemetery, with carved letters. No picture on the stone. I can't quite visualize the tomb itself. I see a solitary man crying the loss of his beloved, over red roses and white lilies that he previously laid by the stone.

It reminds me a lot of Phantom Of The Opera... I see Christine's resting place. Cemeteries usually bring me bad conotations, but this one is actually romantic, in a sad way.

I don't know what lillies smell like. I smell roses, and sense the mist. Normally I hate rose notes, but here they are soft, melow, not pungent.

Normally I wouldn't wear something like this, but the description is so gorgeous, the scent so pretty and evocative, that even if I don't wear it, I'll have to keep the imp.

So glad I tried it, as the notes didn't sound appealing at all.

Arcana - Sweet Box

A delectable, sensual, (almost!) edible kiss of sweetness. French cocoa absolute, white sugar crystals, wolfberry honey, butter CO2 extract, oatstraw, copaiba, milk thistle, a hint of patchouli, and the smallest wisp of woodsmoke.

Buttery chocolate. Disgusting, nauseating. Way too sweet and foody. I love Jo Malone's chocolate note, but this thing here belongs in cake batter - and I do not mean that in a good way. Eeeeew.

Veredict:
swap box.

Possets - Scent of Angels

The lingering odor of sanctity, The Scent of Angels is truly a magnificent and heartbreakingly beautiful perfume. This is what you would imagine you could smell after angels had disappeared. Is it vanilla, is it floral, is it musk? Is it all of those things or is the combination more than the sum of its parts? In any case you will say it is stunning and leave it at that. Imagine one small down feather floating downward after an angel has flitted through your life.

My first impression, after wearing this for the past couple of hours, is that this scent cannot possibly offend anyone. Soft, but with presence. Sweet, without being cloying. I cannot tell what's in here (I'd guess vanilla and a light musk, but don't take my word for it), but I totally buy that this is what angels smell like. Heavenly, good, positive, smiling, soft.

This reminds me of BPAL's Seraphim - but given that I only tested Seraphim once, I don't know how true to reality my memory of it is.

I probably won't need a full bottle, but will definitely keep the imp - and who knows? I won't be too surprised if I find myself wearing this too often. For sure, this is one of the most wearable perfume oils I've found so far.

Color: light cream

Images evoked:
An angel - a typical angel, dressed in white, or perhaps very light cream, with wings and all, male, tall, longish medium-blond hair, peaceful, a soft smile on his lips... standing in front of me, quietly.

(Update, 2 days later: I already bought a full bottle of this. :-P)

BPAL - Apple of Sodom, Poisoned Apple, Strawberry Moon, Black Cat Crossed My Path, Come To Me
2mila
The Apple of Sodom & Poisoned Apple

P.A.: A perfect, lovely, gleaming red apple whose sweetness masks a swirl of narcotic opium, oleander, and hemlock.

A.o.S:
Native to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, this fruit turns to ashes when plucked as a sign of God's displeasure.

I just found out that I don't like apple scents. (And I thought I really would!) Oh well.

Out of the two, I prefer Apple of Sodom, and I'm considering keeping the imp to try it again on summer. At first it is too strong and apple-y, but when it dries down it gets more pleasant. This is a more somber, serious scent (as far as an apple scent can be somber, that is!) while Poisoned Apple is too tart and sweet, nauseatingly so.

Color
- Poisoned Apple: granny-smith green
Apple of Sodom: gray with a dark green tint

Veredict:
Poisoned Apple needs to go; will keep Apple of Sodom for the summer

Strawberry Moon

Wild strawberries, strawberry flower, vanilla-infused sugar, early summer grasses, and milky dandelion sap.

Another note I'd swear I'd love, but I don't: strawberry. Too sweet, too foody, too artificial, too "this belongs in a cake and not in a perfume". I sprayed Armany Code all over it, to mask the nauseating smell. This is supposed to smell like strawberries and grass (doesn't it sound nice???), but the grass was in the background, I barely noticed it.

Color:
translucid light red

Too bad I blindly bought a bottle of this, which now I'll have to get rid of. :-(  Beautiful label, though.

Veredict:
needs to go

Conjure Oils - Black Cat Crossed My Path

Did that darling kitty just trash your luck? How could such a sweet critter cause so much fear and misunderstanding? Reclaim the black cat as the rightful symbol of good luck that it is! Black vanilla, blacker amber and blackest patchouli, sugar peach, midnight musk and sweet cream

Another bottle that I bought blindly (the description sounded good, and I LOVE black cats!) and now I'll have to get rid of. Hate at first sniff, confirmed later when I applied some to my skin.

To me this smells like a nauseatingly sweet mix of artificial caramel & cream, about to go rancid. (Nice imagery there!) I think that sums it up. Not pleasant in my kitchen, let alone on my skin!

Color: caramel

Veredict: needs to go

Come To Me

A phenomenally powerful attractant. Sexual and commanding in the extreme.

This smells like soap to me. Strong soap, hard to ignore. "Phenomenally powerful attractant?" Only if I had a shower fetish! I washed it off my wrist after 2 minutes - with my own mildly scented soap. (Maybe it would get better after 2 min, but sorry, I didn't feel like waiting, or going to work like that.)

Veredict: Swap box. Maybe someone else will get turned on over this.

Voodoo Lily

I'm not a fan of florals, for the most part, so my review of this is already biased. Anyway, this appears to be a one-note scent, a heavy and sweet floral. The liquid is red, and the "aura" is red too - initially I was wondering if there was dragon's blood in this. My husband sniffed my wrist and said "This smells like a flower mixed with mexican food! Like the flower, hate the spices!" (lol) I can't say I smelled any mexican food here, but I can see why he did - there is a very mild spicy undertone (very mild and non-offensive, mind you). I did not enjoy sniffing my own wrist with this (too heady, too sweet, too candy-red), but I found myself enjoying the waft of scent in the air throughout the day. And it did stay on my skin for many hours - now it's 4pm (I put it on at 8am) and it finally disappeared - which I see as a big plus.

All in all, though, it's not my thing, so I'll pass - although I would really recommend it to red floral lovers.

Thorns

Damn, how to describe this? It IS like a thorn: all sharp edges, lacks in color, is is bitter and unfriendly, in a cutting sort if way. Not unpleasant, but it advises you to stay away. "Leave me alone and I'll leave you alone," seems to be its message. I have no clue what this contains, nor curiosity to find out.

And of course, I don't care to wear it.

Penitence

I am surprised to actually enjoy this. As someone suggested, this is something that Severus Snape would wear! It is not too churchy, as I expected from a mix of frankincense and myrrh. It is sober, serious, rigid, but in a calm and soothing way - as in, "I'm not here for games, or to waste time; I know precisely what I'm doing, and it's all under control". (Yes, that is something that Snape would say.) It's... grounding. Not playful, full of flourish, pretentious. Some days I just want to be quiet and serious.

I don't know yet if this is something that I'd wear often, but we shall see! I'll definitely keep my imp handy.

Love Lies Bleedng, Verdandi, Voodoo Lily, Oneiroi, A Countenance Forboding Evil, Queen Alice, Tisip
2mila
More imps that I'm not good and ready to get rid of, that I want to reevaluate some time in the future (moving to my tea blue box!):

O, Havana, Sed Non Satiata

Things to swap:

Love Lies Bleeding

The velvet flower. A lush, thick, luxuriant bloom, bold and red.

Single-note flower. Strange, burns a little.

Verdandi

Necessity. Deep herbs and apple with black amber.

Necessity? For a strange herbal smell? No, not quite.

Voodoo Lily

Amorphallus, indeed. A breathtakingly exotic, wild, and grossly erotic spicy gold, purple-black, and burgundy lily.

I agree with the spicy gold part: this flower smells like spices, perhaps cardamom. Very interesting & exotic, but not for me.

Oneiroi

Created to invoke the ancient Greek deities of dreams. On the shores of the ocean, somewhere in the West, they dwell behind their gates of horn and ivory. Soporific, dark and unfathomable: a somnambular blend of deep lavender, white sandalwood, jasmine, bergamot and mugwort.

This is a dark, deep lavender. I hate lavender - my mom loves it. Saving for my mom!

A Countenance Forboding Evil

Thy gloomy features, like a midnight dial, Scowl the dark index of a fearful hour. Patchouli, ylang ylang, blood orange, and vetiver.

I wouldn't call this evil. Old Scratch and Malice smelled evil to me - as in, "I like hurting others" evil. This one is more anti-social, brooding, with a piss-poor sense of humor, maybe angry, wanting to be left alone - but with no intent to hurt or take advantage of others. This is Penitence having a really bad day. Strong, bitter, serious - unfortunately, unlike Penitence, it doesn't offer any comfort or pleasure.

Queen Alice

Carnation, posies, and white amber with a hint of inky treacle, sandy cider, and wooly wine.

Just another nauseating, non-special floral.

Tisiphone
The Avenger of Murder. Oleander with black patchouli, ylang ylang, and neroli.

Something very generic-smelling. Floral.  Did not enjoy.
